About this tool

Made for the task at hand.

Translate ordinary Unix file modes without special privilege bits. Symbolic changes start from no permissions and apply clauses from left to right.

How to use

  1. Enter three octal digits or clauses such as u=rwx,g=rx.
  2. Choose numeric, symbolic, or combined output.
  3. Review owner, group, and other access bits.
Your work stays yours.
Tool inputs are processed locally in your browser and are never sent to KitVerse servers. Clear the workspace when using a shared device.
Common questions
Are setuid and sticky bits supported?

No. The calculator intentionally supports ordinary three-digit rwx modes and rejects nonzero special bits.

How do symbolic + and - clauses work?

They modify a mode starting at 000, processed in comma order; an omitted who target means all classes.
